The South American lungfish, Lepidosiren paradoxa, is an obligatory air-breather found often in severely hypoxic waters. Under such environment, the oxygen obtained from air-breathing can leak to the hypoxic aquatic medium through the skin or gills. Both aerial and aquatic breathing were simultaneously measured in the lungfish in normoxic and hypoxic water. Total oxygen uptake in normoxic water at 25 degree C was 32.96 +- 3.14 mgO-2/kg cntdot h, of which 20.08 +- 2.12 mgO-2/kg cntdot h (60%) was through air-breathing and 12.88 +- 2.05 mgO-2/kg cntdot h was taken from the water. Aquatic respiration decreased with increasing hypoxia, and the threshold for oxygen leaking to the water was around 22 torr O-2. The average oxygen loss was 2.5 mgO-2/kg cntdot h at water tension of 7.5 torr O-2. Notwithstanding the decrease in aquatic oxygen uptake or even O-2 loss to hypoxic water, the level of oxygen uptake through aerial breathing remained unchanged.
