Bionomics of Trioxys Binodoxys indicus, an aphidiid parasitoid of Aphis craccivora 14 Behavioural activities of the parasitoid associated with its functional response

Bionomics of Trioxys Binodoxys indicus, an aphidiid parasitoid of Aphis craccivora 14 Behavioural activities of the parasitoid associated with its functional response

Zeitschrift Fuer Angewandte Entomologie: 932: 164-175

The functional response of T. (Binodxys) indicus showing a sigmoid type of relationship between the number of eggs laid or host (A. craccivora) parasitized and their density is presented. This relationship is described using an exponential equation Y = .**GRAPHIC**. which indicates that within 15 min of exposure, in an area of .apprx. 80 cm2, the number of eggs laid by the parasitoid cannot exceed 51.4. This type of functional response is the most stabilizing one. At low host densities (.ltoreq. 10) the parasitoid is unable to locate the host in .apprx. 50% of the cases. At high host densities (.gtoreq. 20) the parasitoid approaches the host quicker and stays on the leaf (of the host plant) longer than at low densities (.ltoreq. 20). The number of antennal encounter and pricking by the parasitoid increases with the increase of host numbers. The wasp emigrates from an area where she parasitized most of the hosts which is initiated by antennal encounter with parasitized hosts. Different behavioral activities in relation to functional response are explained and discussed.
