During a lepidopterological survey of the volcano Etna (Sicily), several larvae of different instars, pupae and adults of Orectis proboscidata (Herrich-Schaffer, 1851) were regularly observed inside a 25 m long lava tube. The caterpillars were feeding on dead oak roots (Quercus gr. robur) which had penetrated through the upper wall of the tube and were found all the year round. This fact supports the view that the stability of environmental factors might occasionally lead this species to show partly overlapping generations, at least a very local scale. The caterpillars also pupated inside the tube, in a suspended silken cocoon intermingled with root fragments or earth particles. It has to be noticed that a wholly similar life style has been outlined for some Hawaiian species of Schrankia Hubner, 1825 (Noctuidae).
