The paper deals with defensive secretion used by Suocerathrips linguis (MOUND & MARULLO 1994). The droplets of S. linguis secretion contain esters of acetic acid and long chained saturated and unsaturated alcohols (C16 .. C20) as main components (fig 1, peaks from 17.11 to 19.82 min retention time). In contrast to other volatiles emitted by S. linguis (fig. 2), there are no differences in the mixture of droplet secretion between males, females and larvae. The insects are able to hold the droplet with a special arrangement of setae at the tip of the abdominal tubus. 4 (larvae) to 6 (adults) appr. 60 pm long setae are "swimming" on the droplet, while some short setae are necessary to prevent spreading of the secretion.
