Chemical modulation of aggressiveness in Nile tilapia juveniles conspecifics released factors Modulacao quimica da agressividade em juvenis de tilapia-do-nilo por fatores liberados por co-especificos
Chemical modulation of aggressiveness among conspecifics of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) was evaluated utilizing the mirror test. The measurement of aggressiveness was made taking into account latency for the first confront, frequency and time spent in the confronts, as well as time spent in locomotion. Isolated fishes were tested according to following conditions: a) water without contact with conspecifics (n = 32); b) water from an aquarium containing newly formed group (40 min) of conspecifics (n = 16); and c) water from an aquarium containing a group formed 3 days before the test. It was also analyzed the agonistic profile of the groups in the water supplying aquariums. It was concluded that there is chemical modulation of aggressiveness in the species studied, and this effect reflects changes in the aggressive motivation. Furthermore, chemical modulation of aggressiveness can be affected by the releaser animals stress level.
