Objective: Examination of the practicability and the value of the non-invasive imaging techniques computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for examination of the lung in snakes. Material and methods: Three Indian pythons (Python molurus) With severe clinical signs of dyspnea and microbiological detection of pathogens supported by postmortem findings of severe pneumonia were used for radiological as well as a CT and MRI examination. The findings were compared to the results in healthy snakes. Results: With the radiographic examination, only few indications for the presence of pneumonia could be found. In contrast, using CT, clear shadowing as well as increased densities could be determined within the pulmonary tissue. The MRI examination demonstrated a hyperintense signal within the lung tissue (T2 weight) indicating inflammatory processes. Conclusion and clinical relevance: This study demonstrated the high diagnostic value of the CT and MRI technique for the diagnosis of respiratory diseases in snakes and a basis for systematic studies has been established.
