Comparison of biological and ethological characteristics of Trichogramma pretiosum and T exiguum Hymenoptera Trichogrammatidae Comparacion de los caracteres biologicos y etologicos de Trichogramma pretiosum y de T exiguum Hymenoptera Trichogrammatidae

Two Trichogramma species, T. pretiosum Riley and T. exiguum Pinto & Platner, are eggs parasitoids of two Uruguayan grapevine pests, Argyrotaenia sphaleropa (Meyrick) and Bonagota cranaodes (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). Laboratory studies of five T. pretiosum strains, of six T. exiguum strains and of the F2 mixture of all strains in each species allowed to analyze their thermic preferences (15, 25 and 30degreeC were tested), host plant preferences (apple tree, pear tree and grapevine were tested), host preferences (A. sphaleropa and B. cranaodes were tested), biological characters (especially parasitism efficiency, sex ratio and rate of emergence), and behavioural characters (locomotor activity and circadian rhythm). Results did not obviously discriminate the two species and field studies will be needed to select the best species to be used in biological control against grapevine pests. Nevertheless, both T. pretiosum and T. exiguum showed a preference to parasitize A. sphaleropa in relation to B. cranaodes. At 15degreeC, T. exiguum did not produce offspring, and therefore cannot be released during the too cold months.
