In a spruce forest 4 preserving agents were tested in pitfall traps. Benzoic acid is not recommendable, as preservation is rather bad. Formaldehyde solution had best preserving abilities, but is the least healthy agent. Moreover it is attractive to Collembola, Nematocera, Araneae, Curculionidae and some carabid beetles. Ethylene glycol is a good compromise between preservative and toxic quality, but its attraction to Gastropoda makes its use problematic in slug rich areas. A good alternative is copper sulphate with almost no attraction but some deficiencies in restraining fungus growth. Moreover careful handling is needed as copper is rather toxic to the environment.
