Paecilomyces lilacinus, grown on rice grains, was mixed into soil substrate, which was then used in growing tomato seedlings, to protect them against M. javanica parasitism after the seedlings had been planted in soil infested with the nematode. The fungus applied with the rice grains reduced the number of galls per gram of roots and per root system, respectively, in 61.1% and 55.8% compared with the control treatment, and in 19.4% and 37.8% compared with the addition of rice grains without the fungus. This method significantly reduced the number of galls in the plant roots under greenhouse conditions, not only by the effect of the organic amendment, but also because of the effect of the antagonist fungus.
