, : Courtship, mating and oviposition behavior of Chelonus insularis Hymenoptera, Braconidae reared in Spodoptera frugiperdas eggs Comportamento de corte, acasalamento e postura de Chelonus insularis Hymenoptera Braconidae em ovos de Spodoptera frugiperda. Revista Brasileira de Biologia. novembro; 554: 555-558 (parte i)

Chelonus insularis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is mentioned in the literature as a natural enemy of corn insect pests, especially of Spodoptera frugiperda. There are only a few references on the general behavior of this parasitoid. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to describe courtship, mating and oviposition behavior of this braconid reared on S. frugiperda. Ten couples of 3-day old adults were placed in separate 50 ml plastic containers and observed for one hour daily. The courtship behavior was initiated when the male touched its antennae on any part of the female's body. This was followed by frequent antennal movements and wing fanning; it then assumed mating position, which consisted of mounting the receptive female. The female then assumed normal walking position and kept still. The average mating duration was 20 seconds (range: 2-60 seconds). When exposed to a host's egg mass, females started antennating immediately followed by introduction of ovipositor on egg mass, which took from 2 to 12 seconds. The oviposition intensity slowed down after 30 minutes of contact with the egg mass.
