Current and historical observations on the highly endangered white-eared night-heron in south east China Aktuelle und historische Beobachtungen des stark gefaehrdeten Hainanreihers in Suedost-China

ZGAP Mitteilungen. Mai; 20: 13

The White-eared Night-Heron (Gorsachius magnificus) is one of the 50 rarest and least known bird species in Asia. This study scrutinizes 'rumours' of sightings of this heron in South China. Its habitat are broad-leaved and coniferous-broadleaved forests in mountain regions with swampy area, streams and lakes. Significant sightings of herons in the Jiulianshan nature reserve in the Jiangxi province were made in 2003. Although mostly nocturnal, they were also seen during the day. Other sightings came from the mountain regions of Wuyan and Lushan, and from the Chebaling nature reserve. Several records from SE China are historical and need confirmation. Data from 1992 confirmed observations from the province Hubei at Shennongjia nature reserve. Recent data exist for the province Guangxi where about 43 - 55 birds have been confirmed.
