Current knowledge of fishes of the Argentinean continental shelf and adjacencies Estado actual del conociemiento de los peces de la plataforma continental Argentina y adyacencias

Unknown

This paper deals with the fishes inhabiting in brackish and marine waters of the Southwest Atlantic between 34deg. S and 55deg. S, with particular mention of those of commercial importance for Argentina. First, from a systematic point of view, a synthesis of the current knowledge of fishes of the region and a comment on their geographic distribution in relation to environmental conditions are made. Later, the following groups are briefly considered: elephant fishes, sharks and rays, congrids, clupeids and engraulids, mictophids, gadids, macruronids and merluciids, ophidiids, aterinopsids, sparids, sciaenids, nototheniids, pinguipedids, scombrids, flats fishes and others (scorpaenids, mugilids, polyprionids, pomatomids, carangids, mullids, cheilodactilids, zoarcids, percofids and centrolophids). In each case, the number of species representing the group or family in the argentine shelf is indicated, those of commercial interest are mentioned and a synthesis of the ones with poorly known distribution and biological characteristics is made. In order to facilitate recognition of the marine species of the Atherinopsidae Family (silversides) two identification keys arc presented: one for whole and the other for dissected or partially digested specimens. The generic name of castaneta is changed from Cheilodactylus to, since its correct name is Nemadactylus bergi (Norman, 1937). Finally, the past and future of the marine ichthyological studies in Argentina are commented.
