Differential tooth wear in a roe deer buck Capreolus capreolus, Linne 1758 Unterschiedliche Gebissabnutzung bei einem Rehbock Capreolus capreolus, Linne 1758
Micro-hardness measurements were conducted on the first molars of the two hemimandibles of a roe buck whose cheek teeth showed a great difference in the wear and colour of the dentine and enamel. The micro-hardness of the right and left M1 did not differ for the enamel nor for the dentine. An average Vickers hardness (HV) of 329.48 was determined for the enamel and 64.26 for the dentine of both molars. The enamel is significantly harder on the outside surface than on the inside surface. The hardness of the dentine increases towards the enamel cover. The dentine adjacent to the dentine-enamel boundary is significantly harder than the dentine close to the pulp. An increased chewing activity on the left side could have been the cause for the increased wear of the left row of cheek teeth.
