The distribution and abundance of several bivalve species living on subtidal soft bottoms were studied as related to depth and substrate grain size at the San Jose Gulf (Lat. 42 degree 20'S; Long. 64 degree 20'W) and south of the San Matias Gulf (Chubut, Argentina). Species abundance and their relationships with depth and substrate were analyzed using correspondence analysis. Two species groups were found, the first group, formed by the protobranchs Ennucula puelcha and Malletia cumingi, the tellinid Macoma uruguayensis and the veneracean Pitar rostratus are found associated with very fine sands and the silt-clay fraction, usually at depths between 31 and 60 meters. The species in the second group have heterogeneous substrate and depth preferences: the corbulid Corbula lyoni is related with medium percentages of the granule fraction and medium depth; the venerid Ameghinomya antiqua is associated with medium percentages of the granule fraction and depths between 0 and 60 meters; the tellinid Tellina petitiana is related with medium sand and shallow waters (0-10 m). The species feeding behaviour and their morphological adaptations are discussed.
