Distribution and population size of cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo in Germany Bestand und Verbreitung des Kormorans Phalacrocorax carbo in Deutschland

, : Distribution and population size of cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo in Germany Bestand und Verbreitung des Kormorans Phalacrocorax carbo in Deutschland. Vogelwelt, 1174-6: 344-348

The geographical distribution and size of breeding population of the Cormorant in Germany up to the year 1995 is briefly reviewed. The population has grown to 15,075 pairs in 60 colonies. Most of the increase was due to growth of the existing colonies in the northernmost federal states (Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern), but a number of new colonies were established inland as far south as Baden-Wurttemberg and Bavaria. There are indications, especially in Denmark and the Netherlands' that the Cormorant population has reached the carrying capacity of the environment and is decreasing again in some areas (e. g. Lake Ijssel region). Numbers of staging Cormorants in Schleswig-Holstein did no longer increase after 1992. There is considerable political pressure, particularly in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, to lift protection of Cormorants and legalize shooting and destruction of colonies.
