The population of Paracentrotus lividus (Echinidae Echinodermata) was studied along the coast of the Marine Protected Area Penisola del Sinis Isola di Mal di Ventre (western Sardinia, western Mediterranean sea) in order to evaluate the sustainability of the sea urchin fishery in the MPA and to support fishery management. Density and population structure were analysed at 43 stations located at three depth zones (-2, -5 and -10 m) in 10 sites on rocky and Posidonia oceanica seabed. The surfaces of rocky, sandy and seagrass were measured from geo-referenced digital maps of the seabed obtained by image processing of aerial photos. The abundance of P. lividus in the MPA amounts to 52x106 (C.I 36-72x106) individuals, the abundance of harvestable individuals (size >5 cm) is 14x106( C.I 9-21x106). The potential yearly catches, estimated form the number of licenses, day at sea, and individual quotas; were 13x106 for the season 2003-2004, and represent almost the entire stock. The catches from harvest logbook data, were estimated in ca. 106 individuals, 7% of the individuals with size >5 cm.
