Distribution and relative abundance of Gerreidae Osteichthyes, Perciformes in the Sepetiba Bay, RJ Distribuicao e abundancia relativa de Gerreidae Osteichthyes, Perciformes na Baia de Sepetiba, RJ

, : Distribution and relative abundance of Gerreidae Osteichthyes, Perciformes in the Sepetiba Bay, RJ Distribuicao e abundancia relativa de Gerreidae Osteichthyes, Perciformes na Baia de Sepetiba, RJ. Arquivos de Biologia e Tecnologia (Curitiba). out; 403: 672-686

Fish Gerreidae are very abundant in tropical and sub-tropical coastal lagoons and play an important role either as economic resources by participating in artisanal fisheries and as ecological part by linking primary and tertiary trophic level in the ecosystem food web. This group of fishes ranked among the top abundant fish in both number and biomass in the fish community of Sepetiba Bay, a 305 km2 coastal lagoon with a wider communication with the sea at Rio de Janeiro State (22degree54' and 23degree04'S; 43-34' and 44degree10'W). A fish sampling programme of otter trawl, between July-1993 and June-1995, and beach seine, between July-1993 and June-1994, was carried at fixed sampling sites, aiming to detect seasonal and spatial trends in relative abundance and distribution-of Gerreidae. Monthly sampling were performed in one annual cycle (Jun-1993 to July-1994) for both otter trawl and beach seine. while bi-monthly sampling were done for a second annual cycle (August-1994 to June-1995) only for otter trawl. Environmental parameters of temperature, salinity, transparency and depth were taken at each fish sampling. Six species, (Gerres aprion. Gerres gula, Gerres melanopterus, Gerres lefroyi, Diapterus rhombeus and Diapterus richii) were recorded in the area, but only D. rhombeus, G. aprion and G. gula occurred in all sampling sites during all year round and contributed to appr. 90% in numbers and weight of all Gerreidae catches. Spatial segregations were indicated among the three species which seems to use different areas in the inner Bay. Young-of-the-year G. aprion and D. rhombeus appear firstly in the middle reaches of the Bay at the Itacuruca and Coroa Grande sampling sites in the Autumn, then seem to move to different areas of the inner Bay, while G. gula occur only in the inner Bay. Spatial segregation is suggesting because each species peak in abundance in most of the time at different area in the inner Bay (G. aprion, Meio da Baia; D.
