Distribution and status of Bombina pachypus Anura Discoglossidae in Liguria Distribuzione e status di Bombina pachypus Anura Discoglossidae in Liguria

, : Distribution and status of Bombina pachypus Anura Discoglossidae in Liguria Distribuzione e status di Bombina pachypus Anura Discoglossidae in Liguria. Rivista di Idrobiologia. 2001 Gennaio-Aprile; 401: 239-246

Bombina pachypus is endemic to peninsular Italy and Sicily. Liguria is the northwestern edge of its geographical range. In particular, this species is confined to the eastern part of this region (La Spezia province and a small part of eastern Genoa province). In Liguria the most serious threat is habitat loss and destruction (little ponds, puddles, artificial pools). The threats to survival of Bombina pachypus are connected to the loss of traditional agriculture and therefore of the irrigation puddles where this species was very common a few years ago. We took a census of the most interesting areas for the yellow-bellied toad according to the Ligurian regional law 4/1992 (Protection of Reptilia, Amphibia and freshwater Invertebrata) and the CEE directive (Nature 2000 net).
