The San Jorge Gulf is a wide sea entrance in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean that extends from 45deg. S to 47deg. S at 64deg. 40 minute W. Important fisheries are developed here, such as that of the common hake and other fishes, the Argentinean prawn and the southern king crab. The Gulf is also the breeding area of these and other species of commercial interest. The objective of this work has been to recognize the species of decapod and stomatopod crustaceans that inhabit the area and its distribution. The samples have been obtained from different trawlers operating in the Gulf, and intertidal and sublittoral coastal samplings, since 1997. Twenty seven species of decapods and 2 stomatopods have been registered. Ten species are typical of warm-temperate waters and seven of them present the southern limit of their range in the Gulf. Fourteen species are typically magellanic and several come up to Brasil. The presence of Carcinus maenas is included as a recently installed population in the area. Five species occupy the intertidal and upper subtidal, associated to hard bottoms and nine species extend in the subtidal until 30-40 in deep, depending on the existence of the appropriate substrata. Other eight species extend between subtidal and the deeper zones of the Gulf. Crustaceans are distributed according to the main bottom types.
