Douglas-fir needels as larval food of Lymantria monacha L - A qualitative comparision to Norway spruce needles Douglasiennadeln als Nahrungsressource fuer Larven von Lymantria monacha L Ein qualitativer Vergleich mit Fichte

Mitteilungen der Deutschen Gesellschaft fuer Allgemeine und Angewandte Entomologie. Juli; 15: 31-34

The suitability of neophytic Douglas fir needles and Norway spruce needles as food for Lymatria monacha larvae was studied in both a choice test and a breeding experiment in the lab. Beside the bioassays needle compounds were analysed. Although larvae significantly preferred Douglas fir needles, feeding on Douglas fir resulted in significantly lower weights of pupae compared to spruce. These results might be explained by the presence of high amounts of glucose and fructose as phagostimulating agents and a high concentration of procyanidins of different composition.
