Egg neglect in some procellariids Lincubation intermittente chez quelques procellariides
Egg neglect, frequent among Procellariiformes, shows different aspects according to species. Temporary desertions are longer and more numerous in the Kerguelen Petrel Pterodroma brevirostris of the Crozet archipelago than in the Bulwer's Petrel Bulweria bulwerii and in the Cory's Shearwater Calonectris diomedea of Selvagem Grande, representing in all 21.2, 3.4 and 0.5% respectively of the true incubation length. In the first one, birds of both sexes and of various experiences are concerned, and breeding success is the same for them and for the whole population. In the second and third ones on the contrary, inexperienced birds are especially concerned and a permanent desertion frequently follows these neglects (68%). That intermittent incubation is linked to the length of the feeding trips and thus mostly to the difficulties encountered by the birds to collect their food. Cory's Shearwaters, which feed in the rich waters of the Canary Current, seem to have not much, unlike Kerguelen Petrels which forage over rich, cold waters the production of which is scattered and always entails long searches.
