Egg-laying behaviour of Hipparchia statilinus in eastern Germany Lepidoptera Nymphalidae Satyrinae Eiablageverhalten und -habitat von Hipparchia statilinus in Brandenburg Lepidoptera Nymphalidae Satyrinae

Egg-laying behaviour of the Tree Grayling (Hipparchia statilinus Hufnagel, 1766) or field records of eggs have not yet been described from Germany. In this study we present data on seven cases of egg-laying behaviour and two cases of egg findings without the presence of an egg-laying female observed at two military training areas south of Potsdam (eastern Germany, state of Brandenburg). The field sites were xerothermic places, completely exposed to the sun, and consist of patchy vegetation of Corynephorus canescens with dried moss or pure sand. Mostly, eggs were found several centimetres remote from vital or decayed Corynephorus-plants attached to the underside of dead plant material, e.g. moss, lichens, last year's grass. Corynephorus canescens is presumed to be main diet of the larvae, since it is abundant at the oviposition sites. Finally, causes for the endangered status of the species and measures for its protection are discussed.
