Eggs predation and propagules removal in an Atlantic forest fragment Brazil Predacao de ovos e remocao de propagulos em um fragmento de floresta Atlantica, ES-Brasil
The predation of eggs and the removal of propagules (fruits and seeds) were followed in the edge and inside of an Atlantic forest fragment (21.787ha) in the Espirito Santo State, southeastern Brazil during a period of seven days. Eggs of Cotornix cotornix (Phaseanidae), seeds of Virola oleifera (Myristicaceae) and fruits of Andira fraxinifolia (Leguminosae) were used for predation and removal simulation. Inside the forest, the eggs predation and the propagules removal were significantly lower than in edge, with the last 36.6% of the eggs and 18% of the propagulates being predated and removed. Fruits and seeds showed differences in the removal rates. The edge and the inside forest showed significantly differences about canopy height, litter quantity, fallen trunks and lianas density. The results bring about the evidence of the indirect effects of forest fragmentation on the community structure.
