California Mastitis Test was performed in order to evaluate mastitis occurrence in twenty dairy cow properties situated in counties of the Vale do Paraiba Fluminense-RJ. A total of 188 cows were submitted to this test. After, positive samples of milk and Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) specimens were collected in order to perform bacterial isolation and identification. 36 bacterial isolates were obtained from milk samples, and the following bacterias were identified: Coagulase positive staphylococci (27,80%), E. coli (19,50%), Staphylococcus hyicus (11,11%), Bacillus spp. (8,20%), S. saprophyticus (5,55%), Streptococcus spp. (5,55%), S. aureus (5,55%), S. epidermidis (2,79%), Enterobacter agglomerans (2,79%), Shigella spp. (2,79%), S. intermedius (2,79%), Arcanobacterium pyogenes (2,79%) and Enterobacter spp. (2,79%). 43 strains were isolated from flies macerates, detecting Shigella spp. (14,00%), Coagulase negative staphylococci (11,62%), E. agglomerans (9,30%), Enterobacter spp. (9,30%), S. saprophyticus (6,98%), Salmonella typhi (6,98%), S. aureus (6,98%), E. coli (6,98%), Salmonella spp. (6,98%), S. schleiferi ssp. coagulans (2,32%), Coagulase positive staphylococci (2,32%), S. pullorum (2,32%), Proteus vulgaris (2,32%), Shigella flexneri (2,32%), Corynebacterium spp. (2,32%), Bacillus brevis (2,32%), Arthrobacter agilis (2,32%) and Bacillus spp. (2,32%). In all properties it was possible to find animals positive for mastitis, and also the presence of S. calcitrans. The raise in the incidence of mastitis could be related to the presence of the stable fly, once it was possible to observe coincidence in S. aureus isolates from milk and fly samples in two properties, and E. coli, in another one. Another bacterial species such as: Staphylococcus spp. coagulase (+), Bacillus spp., S. saprophyticus, Enterobacter agglomerans, Enterobacter spp. and Shigella spp. were identified from samples of both material collected from different properties, although no coincidence was showed in the isolation.
