Females preserving juvenility sex specific development of feather characteristics in the shelduck Tadorna tadorna Weibchen bleiben jugendlich Geschlechtsspezifische Entwicklung von Gefiedermerkmalen bei der Brandente Tadorna tadorna

, : Females preserving juvenility sex specific development of feather characteristics in the shelduck Tadorna tadorna Weibchen bleiben jugendlich Geschlechtsspezifische Entwicklung von Gefiedermerkmalen bei der Brandente Tadorna tadorna. Vogelwarte. Dezember; 412: 143-149

White fringes of 6th, 10th and 12th secondary flight feathers of shelducks were scanned and their proportions of the vane areas measured using ArcView GIS software. First year birds had broad conspicuous fringes on both all secondaries and primaries 1-5. Older birds had only narrow fringes on secondaries or none. No differences between two years old birds and older ones were determined. However, throughout their lives, females, as a rule, had broader fringes on secondaries than males. A marbled pattern was seen on the tips of the two innermost primaries only in females. Moreover, in some individual birds, fringes showed constant individual features for several years.
