During March 1996, a mortality of fishes was recorded at San Miguel stream, located in Buenos Aires province. (36degree05'S; 58degree01'O). The longitude of the stream is 4500 m and its width 50 m. It is an affluent of Salado river and a series of connected ponds drain through it to this river. In order to study the causes of the mortality four sampling stations were established. Samples of benthos, plankton and fishes were collected. Some physic-chemical parameters were recorded. It was valued the quantity of dead fishes and they were determined taxonomically and their sizes measured. Analysis cuali-cuantitative of the sampled communities evidenced a mineralized environment, rich en nutrients, subjected to elevated temperatures and with low dissolved oxygen concentrations. Phytoplancton analysis allowed to detect dense populations of Microcystis aeruginosa (Cyanophyta), with densities 67600 cel. ml-1 and of Prymnesium aff. patelliferum (Prymnesiphyceae) with densities of 24640 cel. ml-1. Both algae are harmful for fish. The histopathological analysis effected to the fishes showed alterations at level of gill epithelium, renal and liver tissues, proving evidence that the fishes were exposed to a sharp intoxication. The mortality affected fundamentally to Cyprinus carpio and the number of total dead individuals were valued appr. 65000 and their weight was 89304 kg. The scarce level of water, elevated mineralization, high temperatures and phytoplankton density, including the species that produce toxins generated a deterioration in life conditions of fishes. Therefore, the phenomenon occurred in San Miguel stream would be relate to a series of convergent causes.
