From egg to chick - development and rearing of scarlet ibises - compared to the development of Northern bald ibis Aufzucht bei Roten Sichlern - mit Vergleichen zur Entwicklung von Waldrappen

Zoologische Garten, 754: 213-230

Until now there are only a few articles dealing with the development of Scarlet Ibis chicks. In the wild it is not possible to obtain sufficient data, because this species is extremely shy. The papers already published about artificial breeding often dealt with a few aspects of development and mostly there was only one single bird raised, so for example the social behaviour of nestlings remained unknown. This paper summarizes the hand-rearing of three male and five female Scarlet Ibis, Eudocimus ruber in the Vogelpark Metelener Heide. Details are given on the methods of artificial rearing, diet and feeding techniques as well as changes in morphology, including Plumage, bodyweight and the development of different parts of the body. The ontogeny and changes in the behaviour of this species are discribed in detail. All data, as far as possible, are compared to the development of Northern bald ibis chick.
