Gastropod assemblage from the Lodenice limestone Lower Devonian, Pragian at Branzovy near Lodenice, Bohemia Spolecenstvo gastropodu z lodenickych vapencu spodni devon, prag na Branzovech u Lodenice

Casopis Narodniho Muzea Rada Prirodovedna, 1641-4: 3-10

A rich gastropod fauna was collected in the Lower Devonian (Pragian) Lodenice Limestone at the Branzovy quarry south-east of Lodenice (northwestern flank of the Devonian in the Barrandian area) during the years 1992-1993. The coquina containing gastropods lies in the weathering zone, about half a metre below the original soil surface, seemingly in the lower to middle parts of the Lodenice Limestone. The area has been tectonically affected and the limestone block with gastropods thus separated from the neighbouring micritic limestones of different types, containing mainly brachiopods and trilobite fragments. The best preserved, often complete, shells of gastropod; occur in limestones with common stromatactis aggregates. In general, the accumulations of fossils are located at the eastern side of a local mud mound structure, mostly exploited by the old Zalozensky quarry. The gastropod fauna belongs to the Kodymites-Diplozone-Palaeozygopleura Assemblage (Horny, in press) and is characteristic for mud mound biogeocoenoses. The locality lies in the area influenced by import of micrite but the mud mound elevation seemingly offered more solid algal-coated surfaces in better aerated and illuminated shallow-water conditions. Loxonema-dominated and Branzovya-dominated fauna with varied trophic adaptations testifies to a low-energy environment. The majority of genera represent the 7th Linsley category, i.e. the slow epifaunal shell-draggers (Linsley 1979). Diplozone and Coelocyclus were probably more active, the latter possibly being a predator. The relatively common presence of the tergomyan Neocyrtolites testifies to either periodical or local low-energy and hard-bottom conditions. Although conditions of mud mounds were more favourable than their deeper-water environs (as proved e. g. by richness of assemblages, larger shells, absence of dead juveniles etc.), a constant influence of high-energy conditions cannot be assumed.
