Genetic variation and reproductive modes in Bulinus truncatus Audouin, 1827 from Algeria Variabilite genetique et systemes de reproduction chez Bulinus truncatus Audouin, 1827 dAlgerie

Genetic variation and reproductive modes in Bulinus truncatus Audouin, 1827 from Algeria Variabilite genetique et systemes de reproduction chez Bulinus truncatus Audouin, 1827 dAlgerie

Haliotis 35: 13-18

The freshwater pulmonate Bulinus truncatus has been sampled in three localities (five sites) of Algeria, situated in the North, Centre and South of the country. The rate of aphally has been determined on the mean of 201,8 individuals (standard deviation 93.9). This rate varies between 0.7 in the South to nearly 1 in the North. One subset of individuals, for every population, has been studied by starch-gel electrophoresis at 15 presumed loci. No variation was detected within the populations, and only two loci showed a variation between the populations, allowing to distinguish the three localities. This results are explained by the role of elevated rates of self-fertilization and important variations in the temporal availability of the water
