Growth and mortality of juvenile red-spotted shrimp Penaeus brasiliensis Latreille, 1817 in the Araruama Lagoon, Rio de Janeiro Crescimento e mortalidade de juvenis do camarao rosa Penaeus brasiliensis Latreille, 1817 na Lagoa de Araruama, Rio de Janeiro

Growth and mortality of juvenile red-spotted shrimp Penaeus brasiliensis Latreille, 1817 in the Araruama Lagoon, Rio de Janeiro Crescimento e mortalidade de juvenis do camarao rosa Penaeus brasiliensis Latreille, 1817 na Lagoa de Araruama, Rio de Janeiro
Juvenile Penaeus brasiliensis from the Araruama hypersaline Lagoon in the southeastern Brazilian coast were sampled every week from August 1975 until September 1976 using a small trawl. Length frequency analysis and modal progression were used to derive growth and mortality rates during the first growth phase of the life cycle. Growth rates ranged from 1.2 to 1.7 mm year-1. The von Bertalanffy growth function for two sampling sites were Lt-(t) = 126,1 (1e-1,35.t) in "Ambrosio" and Lt-(t) = 138.3 (1-e-1,55.t) in "Salinas". Differences between these sample sites could be associated with hydrological characteristics and with the presence of benthic macrophytes in the substract. In the Salinas station, higher dissolved oxygen levels and a decrease in the salinity and water circulation were found to be the main factors affecting positively the growth rate of the prawns. The data obtained in the lagoon suggest a very high finishing mortality. The average annual instantaneous rate for total losses (Z) ranged from 9.42 to 9.22 year-1. Fishing mortality (M) was higher than 7.0 year-1. It was not possible to separate mortality due to fishing from that due to migration because of absence of fishery effort statistics. Natural mortality rates were similar to those found for other penaeid populations, ranging from 2.08 to 2.41 year-1. Mean length at first capture (L') was estimated to be 42.5 mm Lt, using a 12 mm cod-end mesh size. Mean lengths of individuals above first recruitment to fishing ranged between 52.7 and 54.5 mm Lt. From the relationship between size and relative age, the prawns that are first recruited into the fishery are appr. 3.8 months, considering t-0 = 0.
