Growth and mortality of the catfish Sorubim cuspicaudus Pisces Pimelodidae, in River Sinu, Colombia Crecimiento y mortalidad del blanquillo, Sorubim cuspicaudus Pisces Pimelodidae, en el Rio Sinu, Colombia
Growth and mortality parameters of the catfish Sorubim cuspicaudus was estimated by using length frequency analysis (ELEFAN) to fishes collected between March/1998-February/1999 (sample 1, n=689) and March/1999-February/2000 (sample 2, n=1513). Standard length in cm and total weight in g was measured. The class interval was of 2 cm. The values for asymptotic length (L infinity ), growth rate (K) and age at zero length (t0) were 85.8 ( plus or minus 7.3) cm, 0.28 ( plus or minus 0.01) year-1 and -0.45 ( plus or minus 0,01) years, and 78.4 ( plus or minus 7.3) cm, 0.29 ( plus or minus 0.01) year-1 and -0.44 ( plus or minus 0.01) years, respectively, with mean environmental temperature of 27 deg. C and 95% confidence's limits for each sample. The performance growth index was 3.31 ( plus or minus 0.1) and 3.25 ( plus or minus 0.I) for samples 1 and 2, respectively. The total mortality (Z) was 0.98 ( plus or minus 0.8) and 1.77 ( plus or minus 0.8) year-1 with 95% confidence intervals, natural mortality (M) 0.57 ( plus or minus 0.1) and 0.65 ( plus or minus 0.1) year-1, mortality by fishing (F) 0.41 ( plus or minus 0.7) and 1.12 ( plus or minus 0.7) year-1, respectively. The exploitation rate (E=F/Z) was 0.42 and 0.63, the mean length at first capture (Lc) is 24.7 and 34.6 cm, and the mean length in the catch 36.7 and 39.3 cm for samples 1 and 2, respectively. The estimations of growth rate, age at zero length and condition factor are similar while asymptotic length (L infinity ) decrease from one year to another. The performance growth index is in accordance with data reported for other Pimelodids. The mean length in the catch is smallest than recommended value by Colombian Fishery Agency, and over fishing in sample 2 is observed. With constant fishing effort, decreasing catch of S. cuspicaudus, reproductive performance oscillating, possible diminution of flood plains productivity by controlling inundations and the relative renovation (recruitment and growth) all this affects the fishery of the species in the river basin. This work suggest that the mean length at first capture and the mean length in the catch have increased as a result of conditions cited above. Therefore, the competent agency will have to arrange actions that lead to the regulation and sustainability of the fishery and resource.
