Small numbers of Red-spotted Bluethroat (1 to 6 pairs) breed in the Swiss Alps on an almost regular basis since 1980, principally in the north of the Canton of Ticino where initially one and then 2-3 (6) couples have been studied since 1988. While elsewhere in the Alps pairs breed in Rhododendron Rhododendron ferrugineum heaths the Ticino site is to be found in the exuberant vegetation of livestock resting places. In all cases however the habitat is to be found in damp depressions in the ground or at the base of sheltered slopes where mountain streams run. The adults sometimes arrive as early as the first ten days of May but more often later in the month. Eighteen broods having at least one fledged juvenile took place since 1988 (an average of 4.44 juv/pair). The fidelity of the birds to their breeding site is probably a key factor in the ongoing occupation of the rare isolated sites that are known. At the European level the small Swiss population now represents an isolated western population since the disappearance of the Lombardi and Graubunden sites occupied during the species' expansion period during the 1980s. To sum up the late arrival of the Red-spotted Bluethroat at breeding sites in Central Europe and Scandinavia raises question regarding the majority of spring sightings in Switzerland and Western Europe, as was also discussed by GLUTZ VON BLOTZHEIM & BAUER (1988).
