Habitat preferences and phenology of three Stenobothrus-species were examined in a low-mountain landscape. The study area "Medebacher Bucht" is situated east of the "Rothaargebirge" in South Westphalia and North Hesse where Stenobothrus lineatus, Stenobothrus nigromaculatus and Stenobothrus stigmaticus occur on isolated habitat patches. In 32 patches of semi-dry grassland and pastureland, 82 plots were investigated and data on both vegetation and habitat structure were collected for each of them. Grasshopper densities were recorded using biocoenometer captures within an area of 2 m2. The most frequent species S. stigmaticus occurred on 36, S. lineatus on 21 and S. nigromaculatus on 9 plots. The larvae of S. lineatus reached peak numbers towards the end of June, the nymphs of S. nigromaculatus and S. stigmaticus not before the second half of July. The first adults of S. lineatus appeared by the end of June, whereas S. nigromaculatus and S. stigmaticus did not finish their nymphal development before July. A comparison of the sex ratio in the three capture periods showed that probably males of all Stenobothrus species occurred earlier than the respective females (protandry) as male adults were captured at the beginning of the adult period in higher densities and/or at the end of it in smaller numbers than females. Both Stenobothrus lineatus and S. stigmaticus preferred short dry turf vegetation with partly open soil. However their habitats differed significantly regarding certain parameters: vegetation density and height as well as patch size were lower in S. stigmaticus. An influence of cattle grazing on spatial structure and population density was observed for S. stigmaticus (maximum density: 81 adults/20 m2), whereas S. lineatus was most abundant (maximum: 12 adults/20 m2) in plots with denser vegetation and lower grazing intensity. Based on 20 microhabitat releves the structural preferences of S. nigromaculatus seems to be very short dry turf vegetation (median in grass height: 9 cm) with partly open soil. All habitats were found to be situated within the region of the study area with the lowest precipitation. S. nigromaculatus is the most xerophilous and thermophilous of the three Stenobothrus species. All species live in short turf layers near the ground. S. lineatus as phytophilous grasshopper prefers higher and denser vegetation than S. stigmaticus as geophilous-phytophilous species. The spatial utilization of S. nigromaculatus is similar to S. stigmaticus, but it can be found more often on denser turf layers.
