Host locating ability of Trichogramma pretiosum Riley inshell peanuts under laboratory conditions
The ability of the egg parasitoid, Trichogramma pretiosum Riley, to locate and parasitize eggs of the almond moth, Cadra cautella (Walker), at various depths among inshell peanuts was tested in the laboratory. Egg cards with 50 host eggs were inserted into small wire cages and positioned at 0-, 10- and 20-cm depths in 3.8-liter jars containing 1100 g of inshell peanuts. Either 200 or 500 T. pretiosum-parasitized almond moth eggs, 1 d before eclosion, were scattered on the surface of the peanuts. Two light conditions, 12:12 L:D photoperiod or constant darkness, and two confinement levels, jars left open or jars closed, were tested. T. pretiosum parasitized 63.3% of the almond moth eggs on the surface (0 cm), 36.9% at 10 cm, and 12.7% at 20 cm, regardless of other variables. Percent parasitism was greater at all depths when 500 T. pretiosum were released (46.9%) than when 200 T. pretiosum were released (28.3%). Parasitism was not significantly greater under 12:12 L:D conditions (39.8%) than in constant darkness (35.5%), and confined parasitoids or unconfined parasitoids were about equal in efficacy of parasitism, 37.2% versus 38.0%, respectively.
