Inter and intraspecific genetic divergence between Italian populations of two Drosophila sibling species

Populations of the two sibling cosmopolitan species of Drosophila melanogaster and D. simulans, were sampled in three different Italian localities, and tested to asses their degree of genetic divergence. The analysis of fitness values and body metric characters, shows that Drosophila melanogaster displays little local differentiation and good homogeneity among localities. Conversely, the heterogeneity found among the Drosophila simulans populations depends on functional divergence among localities where the genetic pools seem poorely compatible. Since a narrow environmental range has been considered, where gene flow is expected, the different results obtained for the two sibling species suggest different adaptive strategies by the two species considered.
