It is the aim of the research project "pasture landscape in the River Eider valley" to investigate the development of a semi-open pasture landscape by extensive grazing in a large area. Animal species that have to survive in such a semi-open pasture have to react on spatial changes of their habitats. In particular, specialist species, e.g. saproxylic beetles, are endangered and have to compensate local extinction by resettlement. By the present investigation the distance was determined that can be covered over open grassland by saproxylic beetles during their dispersion phase. The 40 ha large investigated area is situated Southwest of Kiel within the "Eastern hill landscape" of Schleswig-Holstein. Saproxylic beetles were recorded using emergence and flight intercept traps between Mars and August in the year 2000. In total, 145 species with 6900 specimens were recorded. Among these, 40 species (28 %) are endangered due to the Read Area Book of Schleswig-Holstein. Remarkable faunistic records are further described. In order to estimate the distance, saproxylic beetles are flying over open grassland, dispersion models have been developed to determine the supposed location of development. Distances for 23 species were estimated by these models and 9 are distinctly described. For rarely found species that were not significantly correlated with one of these models by this reason, the nearest distance to the next woody area was selected, which is supposed to be the nearest distance they disperse over open grassland in one year. Nature conservation has to focus on species with low dispersion potential to preserve the existing habitats. Species with high dispersion potential cover a distance of 80 m between woody areas within one year, on average
