In Dortmund Zoo (ZD) the first cohabitation of Sumatran orang-utans and Malayan tapirs in captivity was planned for the year 2004. Therefore a new indoor enclosure was built with an area of 290 m2 and a height of 8 m plus an outdoor enclosure of about 1000 m2. Based on observations of orang-utans and Malayan tapirs, prerequisites for the design of an enclosure for a cohabitation of both species are elaborated and possible interactions between the concerned species are discussed.
