Juvenomimetic effects of karajin on the larval development of flesh fly, Sarcophaga ruficornis Fabr Cyclorrhapha Diptera

Karanjin treated third instar larvae of fleshly, Sarcophaga ruficornis manifested three types of morphogenetic forms viz., larval-pupal intermediates, pupal-adult intermediates and deformed adults. With the increase in concentration of karanjin (2000-3500 ppm), more larval mortality and 1-p intermediates were obtained; whereas at lower concentrations (1000-2000 ppm) the percentage of pupal-adult intermediates and deformed adults was more pronounced. Karanjin, the principal furanoflavonoid of Pongamia pinnata L. Pierre (karanj) was used in the crytalline form isolated from the seed oil.
