The mitotic and meiotic chromosomes of three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, and of nine-spined stickleback, Pungitius pungitius, from an inner coastal water basin were investigated. Both species showed a diploid number of 42. The karyotype of G. aculeatus comprises 8 metacentric, 12 submetacentric, 14 subtelocentric, and 8 acrocentric chromosomes. That of P. pungitius consists of 26 meta/submetacentric and 16 subtelo- and acrocentric chromosomes. No heteromorphic sexual chromosomes could be identified. While the karyotype of G. aculeatus was more uniformly, the observations on P. pungitius imply a "plasticity" and render the interpretation of the intraspecific karyological variability more difficult.
