Landscape use by the Great Mouse Eared Bats Myotis myotis in South Tirol Telemetry Landschaftsnutzung der Grossen Mausohren Myotis myotis Borkh, 1797 Chiroptera Vespertilionidae in Suedtirol Teil 1 Telemetrie - Methodenentwicklung und -evaluation

Gredleriana 3: 231-242

To survey the landscape use by a big colony of Greater Mouse Eared Bats (Myotis myotis) in the Etsch Valley (South Tyrol) a new method of radiotelemetry was developed. This method, that combines line transects and point countings with radiotracking, was called "transect telemetry". The new method was tested for two years. In the same time the same animals were also tracked with the standard radiotracking method, the "Homing in on the animal". Comparing both methods, it proved that with the transect telemetry more animals could be surveyed in the same time with the same effort. Since they are localised from greater distances, the accuracy of the new method is less. Additionally, less data was gathered per animal. The distribution of the localisations to different landscapes was the same with both methods. So the transect telemetry is considered useful for this kind of query.
