The present study attempt is to determine the levels of concentration of mercury in different organs of the flat oyster and to describe possible changes induced in the epithelium of the digestive gland. Specimens of Ostrea edulis were collected from cultivations in the Ebro Delta (Tarragona) and exposed to concentrations of 2.5, 5 and 10 mu-g Hg/l for 22 days. Results of atomic absorption spectrometry indicate that contaminants steadily incorporate in the oyster tissues. The structural and ultrastructural study of the digestive gland shows an increase in lysosomal contents in epithelial cells and a decrease in glycogen and lipids in the interstitial connective tissue of the gland. The ability to sequestrate contaminants in oyster tissues and the subcellular alterations detected indicate that the doses of contaminant used might not affect the viability of the studied flat oysters.
