Pollination of winter and net-melon Cucumis melo L Polinizacao em melao Cucumis melo L dos tipos amarelo e rendilhado

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the importance of insect pollination in melon (Cucumis melo L.), in order to determine which insect species visited the flowers, the frequency of visits, the type of foraging activity (pollen and/or nectar collection) and quantitative and qualitative fruit production, using three treatments: flowers covered with individual cover of wire and nylon, to avoid the action of pollinators; flowers without covering and flowers without covering, with and without commercial bee attractant 'Bee Here'. This research was developed in northeast and south of Brazil, with varieties winter and net melon, respectively. Apis mellifera was by far the most frequent visitor. In both places, there was not fruit production in the covered treatment. It is evident that honey bees are important and effective pollinators of C. melo for fruit production (quantity and quality). In both places the use of bee attractants did not improve the results.
