Seahorses are bony fishes with singular morphology and biology. They are particularly vulnerable to overfishing due to some of their characteristics such as limited mobility, small brood size, low population density and monogamous pair bonds in most species. They occur in coastal waters of temperate and tropical regions throughout the world, including estuaries, mangroves, coral reefs and seagrass beds. These fishes are globally exploited for use as aquarium fishes, medicines and curios. At least 77 nations and territories around the world are involved in this trade, among them Brazil. The ample exploitation of seahorses, coupled with a general habitat degradation put their populations at risk. This paper provides an initial assessment of the population structure of Hippocampus reidi captured for the aquarium trade in Brazil, aiming to contribute to the conservation and management of their wild populations. We examined 114 specimens of Hippocampus reidi, obtained from ornamental fish traders, who donated specimens that died in captivity. Morphometric and meristic data were obtained according to Project Seahorse's protocol.
