In 1991 and 1993, 369 female Penaeus schmitti and 143 P. notialis coming from 15 shrimp capturing squares were studied. It was found that 73% and 71% of the squares sampled during the first and the second year were positive to the presence of Penaeus stylirostris simple strand occluded virus (PsSOV) in both shrimp species. The prevalence of infection in 1991 for white shrimp (P. schmitti) was 31% and 21% for pink shrimp (P. notialis) with significant differences (p = 0.01) between them: In 1993 the prevalence was 3% and 7%, respectively (p ltoreq 0.05) without differences among them. There were no significant differences among the squares for any species in particular. Significant differences were found for the prevalence of PsSOV for white and pink shrimp the two years evaluated, finding a sharp decrease in 1993. The intensity of the infection was mild and not significant among species but significantly different among squares. For this reason, it is recommended that the adult shrimp should be obtained from the less contaminated station.
