Rhodeus sericeus Pallas, 1776 - a new record from Denmark Bitterling Rhodeus sericeus Pallas, 1776 - forste fund i Denmark

, : Rhodeus sericeus Pallas, 1776 - a new record from Denmark Bitterling Rhodeus sericeus Pallas, 1776 - forste fund i Denmark. Flora og Fauna. September; 1042: 29-34

A dense population of bitterling (Rhodeus sericeus) was discovered in October 1997 in a small pond north of copenhagen. This species has not previously been reported from Scandinavia. It is most likely that the population derives from human introduction, but the large number of specimens, the age and size range, ovipositor in females, presence of bivalves essential for spawning, all indicate that spawning has taken place in the pond. The number of lateral line scales indicates that the population belongs to the European subspecies Rhodeus sericeus amarus (Bloch, 1782).
