Scots pine foliage and Diprion pini larvae Incidence du feuillage de pin sylvestre sur la survie et le comportement des larves de Diprion pini L role des monoterpenes Hymenoptera Diprionidae
Diprion pini larval preference tests and feeding bioassays were performed with foliage of different clones and of different ages. Needle monoterpenes were simultaneously analyzed. The one-year-old foliage of some clones and the growing foliage cause considerable larval mortality. Larvae always selected one-year-old foliage over growing foliage, but the larval choice did not correspond to their survival rates. Foliage monoterpene composition varied between P. sylvestris clones in the one-year-old foliage and with the age of the foliage. The effects of monoterpene composition in repellent mechanisms against larvae are discussed.
