Studies on columnaris disease in guppy Poecilia reticulata 2 Therapeutic effects of some drugs against Flexibacter columnaris

Studies were made of both the bactericidal effects of oxolinic acid, formalin and sodium chloride on Flexibacter columnaris, and the acute toxicity to the guppies of the sodium chloride. The pathogen was isolated from the caudal fin of guppy (Poecilia reticulata) with fin rot. The bacterium was killed within 24 hours in concentration of 10 ppm, 12.5 ppm and 0.5% for oxolinic acid, formalin and sodium chloride, respectively. The sodium chloride only could kill the bacterium within 2 hours in a concentration of 2%. The value of median tolerance limit(TLm) of the sodium chloride solution against guppies was 2.13% and 2.16% for male and female, respectively. Therapeutic effects of oxolinic acid and sodium chloride against the guppies artificially infected with F. columnaris were also studied. The 24-hour bath of 1% sodium chloride and the 30-minute bath of 20 ppm oxolinic acid were more effective than the results in the other experiments.
