The bird life of the Biere military range Lavifaune de la place darmes de Biere

, : The bird life of the Biere military range Lavifaune de la place darmes de Biere. Nos Oiseaux. Septembre; 493: 129-140 No 469

The Biere military range covers a surface of 6 km2 and is located at 46deg. 32' N/06deg. 20' E at the foot of the Jura Mountains in the Canton of Vaud. Several species of bird not common elsewhere in the Suisse Romande are to be found in good numbers while absent from neighbouring agricultural land. The authors carried out a census of the more interesting species (generally speaking those figuring in the red list of rare and threatened species of Switzerland; ZBINDEN et al. 1994). In 2000 a census was taken of all breeding species. In that year 1107 territories were located within a surface area of 4.6 km2: 75 species were certain or probable breeders while 8 others were possible. Several species in the red list had important populations within the zone under study. Tree Pipit Anthus trivialis (24 territories), Stonechat Saxicola torquata (20), Red-backed Shrike Lanius collurio (19), Corn Bunting Miliaria caiandra (6). A list was made of all the species observed during migration, in winter- time, as well as erratic visitors. Of particular note was the regular wintering of the Great Grey Shrike Lanius excubitor, and the irregular presence of the Hen Harrier Circus cyaneus and Merlin Faico columbarius. Amongst the typical passage migrants are the Tawny Pipit Anthus campestris (regular), Whinchat Saxicola rubetra, Woodlark Lullula arborea, and about a dozen species of waders. A total of 131 species were observed.
