The black beetle an efficient weed feeder in Bangladesh

The black beetle an efficient weed feeder in Bangladesh
Altica foveicollis Jac. has been observed since 1969 to feed voraciously on the weed Ludwigia octovalvis in rice-fields at Joydebpur, Bangladesh. It was also found recently feeding on an unidentified broadleaved weed in wheat and lentil fields. The larvae and adults of the chrysomelid nibbled the leaves and stunted the growth of the weeds, preventing them from competing with the crop, but did not damage the crop. Peak numbers of adults have been observed in February-March, June-July and October-November. It is considered that A. foveicollis is a potential biological control agent of the weeds mentioned.
