Artenschutzreport 12: 14-20

The frontier crossing nature reserve in the Palatine Forest and northern Vosges Mountains offers the habitat conditions the Eurasian Lynx requires: a landscape with cover and undisturbed areas and a sufficient food supply. The cause of its previous eradication, namely unrestrained persecution as a competitor for game and a predator on livestock, has been eliminated now that the lynx is protected by international treaties. This success story has made the lynx a model for conservationists. Between 1983 and 1993 the lynx was successfully re-introduced in the central Vosges Mountains. In the Palatine Forest and northern Vosges Mountains there is a small isolated population of unknown origin, which is endangered because it comprises so few individuals. On both sides of the French/German border monitoring systems were organised, compensatory payment for depredation was introduced and several public-relations projects were started. An international collaboration to create and preserve green corridors connecting lynx habitats is planned. Besides the isolation of subpopulations by highways and cultivated areas, poaching and unintentional killings are serious problems to be solved. At present the isolated population in the Palatine Forest and the northern Vosges Mountains is too small, but a scientifically designed re-introduction of more pairs of lynx could prevent its extinction.
